The Civil Rights Movement was the most important movement in the curtailing of segregation. Occurring from 1954 to 1968, and led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it was pivotal in the African American experience. Civil rights are a necessary component of democracy, the very institution of freedom. When individuals are being denied opportunities to participate in any societal agenda, they are being denied their civil rights.
