Chasing History The Underground Road Trip: Unearthing Culture On A Plantation Tour
We developed the series, Chasing History: The Underground Road Trip, to enhance our historical knowledge and foster a culture of research. One of our methods is the guided plantation tour. A visit to a plantation can be both enlightening and emotional. These sites hold rich histories and powerful stories of human strength and suffering. They allow us to connect with the past, revealing experiences often overlooked in traditional education. By exploring the narratives tied to

The Story of the Dixie 3: A Forgotten Chapter in Civil Rights History
In the rich tapestry of American history, many stories stand out in the fight for civil rights, yet some stories remain overshadowed. One such narrative is that of three determined nurses, now known as The Dixie 3 , whose courageous act of defiance in 1963 sparked a movement and challenged systemic racism. The story was uncovered by filmmaker Denetra Hampton in 2020. She coined the nurses their name, THE DIXIE 3, which will forever be symbolic of the sit-in they organized, an

Chasing History: The Oldest Black Community In The United States
Pocahontas Island, located in Petersburg Va., is the oldest black community in the United States. It was a part of the underground railroad and I had a chance to visit with Richard Stewart, the curator and owner of the Pocahontas Island Black History Museum. It also serves as the Pocahontas Black History Museum. A museum that Mr. Stewart serves as the curator and founder. As a result, he has collected items from slave shackles to celebrities who have stopped by to visit.

My Visit To The Historic Anne Spencer House
Because blacks could not stay in local hotels, the home entertained the likes of Martin Luther King, Langston Hughes and Zora Neal Hurston, owned by the legendary Harlem Renaissance poet and activist, Anne Spencer. The home is located in the historical Pierce Street in Lynchburg, Va. It was on my bucket list for the year, and my husband gave it to me as a christmas gift. The experience was a direct observation of the intersection of history and health equity. Everything about

Chasing History: Why The Death of Dr. Charles R. Drew Should Stir Us All
During my research for a forthcoming film, I ran into the brilliance of Dr. Charles Richard Drew. He is known for his research on blood banks and blood transfusions. As a prominent African American physician during the time of World War II, he protested against racial discrimination of blood donations, and resigned from his position at the American Red Cross. Although this is his research legacy I was drawn to his leadership at Freedman's hospital and Howard University. D

Chasing History: The Endview Plantation
At For Nurses By Nurses Productions we believe that the intersection between history and social injustice is deeply rooted. In this series, Chasing History we take you along the underground railroad of education in hopes of bridging gaps. Pawpaw is America's largest native fruit. And just like myself, there is probably a good chance that you have never heard of it. I visited the 18th century Endview Plantation during their Pawpaw festival to get my own taste of this legenda
