Chasing History: The Underground Road Trip To The Hampton Plantation

Updated: May 10

The Hampton Plantation Historic Site is located at 1950 Rutledge Rd, McClellanville, South, Carolina. It tells the story of the freed people who made their homes in the Santee Delta region for generations after emancipation. We took a trip to the plantation not only to honor those who were enslaved, but to learn more about their plight to freedom.

Host, Denetra Hampton takes you inside of her journey.

The Hampton Plantation House was built around 1735.

Daphne's Lot was the kitchen house in the back of the Hampton Plantation House. Daphne was the long-lived slave who kept the kitchen for the plantation.

The bell rang when the slave owner needed to get the slaves attention. The original bell that was placed in the tree at the time of the building of the Hampton Plantation House is still there.
