On January 4, 2025, the City of Hampton unveiled a historical marker honoring three nurses known as "The Dixie 3." On August 8, 1963, these nurses sat in a "Whites Only" cafeteria at Dixie Hospital in Hampton, Va, igniting a movement that would contribute to the decline of Jim Crow laws across Virginia. The term "THE DIXIE 3" was created by Denetra Hampton, the producer of the documentary, THE DIXIE 3: A Story On Civil Rights in Nursing.

Lecture: The Importance of Civil Rights in Nursing
African American nurses have historically been advocates for civil rights. From the challenges of segregation to the ongoing disparities in healthcare access, their journey has been fraught with obstacles. A film lecture, "The Importance of the African American Nursing Experience During The Civil Rights Movement", by Denetra Hampton will highlight moments like the integration of hospitals in the 1960s, where nurses fought against policies that barred minority patients from receiving care. In addition to historical examples, the event will encourage reflection on how civil rights issues continue to affect nursing today. Most importantly, how the sit-down by THE DIXIE 3 has affected healthcare today.
