In our inaugural cinematic lecture we bring together six iconic women, Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Zora Neal Hurston, Mary McLeod Bethune and Mary Peake. And in this gathering we intersect lessons learned from women-led movements with pressing issues of today.
In 1861 Mary Peake started a school for the children of former slaves under the Emancipation Oak, located now at present day, Hampton, Virginia. Her contributions to those children created a ripple effect so that more might benefit from the power of education.
Today's education policies continue to challenge disparities, equity, and inclusion. This cinematic lecture highlights these key issues and showcases the power of women's voices today.
