The intersection of healthcare and history continues to be a critical collaboration in closing the gap of health inequities. Research has been clear that when we delve into the past there is a revealing of an elaborate tapestry of events and decisions that have left lasting impressions on the terrain we navigate today. From systemic inequalities to cultural legacies, understanding these historical markings is crucial in dismantling barriers to equitable healthcare access and outcomes.
The Dixie 3: A Story On Civil Rights In Nursing Set To Get Historical Marker
For Nurses By Nurses Productions released the film, The Dixie 3: A Story On Civil Rights in Nursing in February of 2020. It examined a 1964 civil rights case filed in New Port News, Va. against the Dixie Hospital in Hampton, Va. The case claimed the civil rights of three nurses, Mildred Smith, Agnes Stokes Chisman and Patricia Taylor Mckenzie were violated after they staged a sit-in on August 8, 1963.
According to Denetra Hampton, Producer and Director of the film " The story is remnant of discriminatory practices and policies that have perpetuated inequities in nursing and healthcare education across generations. Scientific Storytelling allows us to examine historical injustices such as segregation in healthcare facilities, unequal distribution of resources, and limited access based on race or socioeconomic status. It then allows for us to implement evidenced based solutions that ultimately close the gap. What we have done with the placement of a historical marker for The Dixie 3 is solidify the value of our stories but most importantly, be able to educate on the injustice for generations to come.
Revealing of the Marker
After four years of research and help from the descendants of the family, Denetra recently received the news for the final draft for the historical marking for The Dixie 3. The process of acquiring the marker through a film production company is an enormous opportunity for the health sciences to evaluate solutions to health inequities and future approaches to research.
Denetra will be presenting her landmark work of Advancing The Health Sciences Through Scientific Storytelling at the Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders 2024 Conference on September 26, 2024. It will be the first time that she unveils the face of the marker for The Dixie 3.
A New Era in The Health Sciences
In conclusion, the significance of historical markings on health equity cannot be overstated. The work done at For Nurses By Nurses Productions has set a new precedence for the cause. By exploring the past, we gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in our quest for a more just and equitable healthcare system. Let us continue to unearth the impact of history on health equity and work together towards a future where all individuals have equal access to quality care and well-being.
Remember, the past shapes the present, but it is our actions today that will shape the future of health equity.
